Tuesday Tips: How to Read The Labels on Your Favorite Fruits and Veggies

Have you ever noticed the little sticker on your fruits or veggies? It gets scanned at the register but it gives the consumer a lot of info on an edible sticker. I am sure we all have swallowed a few. But this sticker tells us HOW the veggie or fruit was grown and it is a standard in the US.

A 4 digit number (xxxx) is conventional meaning it was grown with pesticides and herbicides. Drenched in chemicals and grown in treated soil, I stay away from conventional fruits and veggies as much as possible

A 5 digits number starting with 8 (8xxxx) genetically modified organisms, they have been debated over decades now, similar to the great debate of cigarettes??? I One specific concern is the possibility for GMOs to negatively affect human health. This could result from differences in nutritional content, allergic response, or undesired side effects such as toxicity, organ damage, or gene transfer.

Organic describes things that are natural or related to nature. In common usage, organic is used to mean “healthful” or “close to nature.” It can also describe foods grown without artificial pesticides or fertilizers.
